Bathroom & Waterproofing

The beauty of Schlüter’s products is that they’ve been designed and manufactured to complement each other, resulting in a reliable water-tight finish which is guaranteed to last for years to come. Incorporating the very latest innovations, Schlüter-Systems provides a fully integrated solution, offering complete freedom of design and allowing you to create the shower, bathroom or wetroom of your dreams.

Some of the main things to consider are:

Uncoupling

All materials expand and contract with temperature, but at varying rates according to their properties. If a tile is adhered directly to a substrate with different properties, the layers are rigidly bound together and their different reactions to the environment result in tension where cracks can form. An uncoupling membrane, such as Schlüter®-DITRA 25, is installed between the substrate and the tile, allowing the two layers to move independently and neutralising stresses, meaning that your installation stays as perfectly crack-free as the day it was laid.

Waterproofing

Offering a stylish finish, with a distinct air of quality, tiles are the ideal pairing to a bathroom or wetroom. On their own, however, they do not constitute a waterproof finish; these materials, and to an even greater extent the grout often used alongside them, are merely water-resistant.

In order to achieve a waterproof result, tiles require support behind the scenes. This comes in the form of waterproof membranes and backerboards, which when properly installed prevent water ingress for the lifetime of the installation.

Inadequate waterproofing in bathrooms and wetrooms can spell disaster, not only for the room in question but also the building as a whole. Schlüter-Systems offers integrated waterproofing and wetroom systems to protect your projects. Their solutions for this area ensure you achieve functional spaces that show off designs to best effect.

Underfloor Heating

Tiles are widely regarded as one of the best materials to use with underfloor heating systems. They have high thermal conductivity, retain heat well and provide a durable surface covering.

Schlüter’s range of underfloor heating systems has been developed to provide solutions for both new-build and refurbishment projects.

Electric

Electric underfloor heating is ever-increasing in popularity, it’s a particularly welcome feature on a cold morning and helps to keep mould and fungus at bay by drying out any residual moisture. In the Schlüter®-DITRA-HEAT-E-DUO system, you’ll find an all-in-one solution for protecting and heating both walls and floors; all that remains is to cast off the slippers and enjoy!

Installation of an electric system is relatively simple and can be performed alongside a routine flooring renovation. Where electric systems really come into their own is in the provision of concentrated zonal heating. They are a great choice for infusing additional luxury into particular areas of a project such as in bathrooms and wetrooms, around a kitchen island or creating heated features such as a heated bench in your bathroom.

Hydronic

An alternative to installing an electric system is to use a wet (or hydronic) system to provide an in-screed heating solution. Hydronic systems, such as the Schlüter®-BEKOTEC-THERM are well suited for larger areas and are usually used as the primary heat source. They’re designed to heat the air within the room as well as the tiled surface so can therefore replace radiators, connecting directly to a boiler. As well as being connected to an existing boiler, hydronic systems can be powered by a number of different renewable energy sources, including ground source heat pumps. They can also be used to cool the floor down in the summer, either via passive cooling of the unheated water or by pumping water chilled to around 18-19°C through the pipes.

Tile Edge Trims

Tile edge trims, sometimes called profiles, provide the finishing touch for your tile installation, covering exposed edges and smoothing transitions between surfaces. This is where it all began for Schlüter-Systems, when in 1975, founder Werner Schlüter created the original edge protection profile, Schlüter®-SCHIENE. Today, the company offers a palette of designs, textures and materials with hundreds of possible combinations, enabling you to achieve the perfect balance of aesthetics and practicality.

They produce trims in base materials of brass, stainless steel, aluminium and PVC, according to the demands they will likely face in situ. For select wall profiles, you will also find an array of textured finishes to match popular tile trends, as well as options to co-ordinate with the latest fashions in sanitary fixtures and fittings.

Stair nosing profiles

The edges of stairs are exposed to heavy mechanical stresses, often resulting in installation failure, and represent a high risk for injuries. Because of their slip resistant design and excellent visibility, Schlüter®-TREP stair nosings and stair trim profiles improve safety and protection, whilst providing an attractive finish.

Movement Joints

Largerfields of tile expand and contract more than smaller ones. This means they willdevelop greater levels of stress and tension, which in turn leads to anincreased likelihood of failure. The solution to handling this problem is theinstallation of movement joints, positioned at certain intervals and withinparticular areas to absorb stresses. Schlüter®-DILEX offers an extensive rangeof movement and control joints in various materials, as well as connection andperimeter profiles for key junctions. All profiles are installed at the sametime as the tile covering and a wide variety, in various material combinations, are available, depending on the mechanical or chemical stresses expected on thecovering.

Drainage solutions

The drainage systems of Schlüter-Systems provide effective and lasting solutions for draining precipitation and cleaning water from balconies and terraces. Whether you need drainage channels along the edge of the balcony, floor drains or openings in a parapet, Schlüter-Systems have the solutions.

Pedestal systems

Movement and control joint profiles

Larger fields of tile expand and contract more than smaller ones. This means they will develop greater levels of stress and tension, which in turn leads to an increased likelihood of failure. The solution to handling this problem is the installation of movement joints, positioned at certain intervals and within particular areas to absorb stresses. The profiles of the Schlüter®- DILEX series offer maintenance-free and functional solutions for all relevant movement joints in balconies and terraces. The profiles are weatherproof and temperature-resistant.

Uncoupling membranes
